Staff Pick: Kate Carder-Thompson

The next time you’re at the Gallery check out the latest staff pick at the end of the corridor – we just changed it!

Canadian artist Ron Martin’s untitled painting entered the Gallery’s permanent collection as a gift of Mr. Irving Zucker in 1994.

The Public Programs Department’s latest staff pick was selected by Kate Carder-Thompson, the Gallery’s School Programs Coordinator and Artist Educator.

Kate’s selection might surprise her younger self, “I must confess that when I first saw Ron Martin’s work back in 1992 I hated it.  My teenage self didn’t understand the point of his big, black paintings or the boxes containing empty paint tubes from his studio.”

Years later, when Kate encountered his work again her opinion shifted, “I tried to be more open minded; I learned that Martin is interested in the process and materiality of art making and that he sets specific boundaries and limits on himself when he creates his work.  This was a revelation for me – that the techniques, tools, and materials artists use to create their work can be the subject matter of the work itself.  Now when I see Martin’s work I try to detect the patterns and rhythms that result from his conceptual approach to painting.  And, I love it.”

Ron Martin was born in London, Ontario. He is known for experimenting with the materiality of his medium and documenting the results. His work emphasizes the relationship between each painting and the viewer – rather than the artist and the canvas. After spending some time with his mulit-coloured work in our corridor you may discover the wonder that paint on canvas has continuously inspired.

The Staff Pick program was launched last year. It allows staff and board members of the Gallery to select an artwork from our 4,000 work permanent collection they wish to see displayed in the corridor.
